Junction Works, Digbeth, Birmingham
Close to where I work in Digbeth, there is a building called Junction Works. It sits on the Grand Union Canal just off Fazeley St. It looks like an old industrial building, however i’m not sure what it was ever used for.
As long as I’ve known it, it’s always been empty. Â I know there used to be a boxing club there at one point. The front of the building has recently been half heartedly renovated. It’s got a brand new roof on it, and in the second room there is a beautifully renovated double glazed glass roof that lets natural light pour in.
My Dad has worked in Digbeth for over 30 years, he said there was a fire there about 10-15 years ago, so I guess that explains the new roof.
I have always liked the building, it would be a dream project that could change as Digbeth becomes more popular. Having spoken to the people who run the site, residential conversion is a no-go. However they would let someone make it in to offices. As you can see from the photos, it needs a lot of work.
I think it would be a shame to convert it in to more offices where it is closed to the public. I’d love to see it made into a chic hotel that shapes its image around the style of the building and helps it to retain it’s character. It could be like a mini version of The Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn, NY. There are rooms underneath that could be the perfect stage to an underground bar. If only I had some money to throw at it, I guess we can all dream!
If you know anything about the building, it would be great if you could share in the comments.
